The climb up the dome of Notre Dame was worth it just to see the gargoyles. They're amazing!
The massive bulk of Notre-Dame Cathedral dominates the Place du Parvis, the square facing the west front, but it is below ground that the story begins.
Under the square, reached by stairs at the western end, the ruins of the Roman town can be seen in the Archaeological Crypt. Up above, as you approach the cathedral, there is a brass marker set into the pavement. It indicates Point Zero, the place from which all distances from Paris are measured.
The cathedral was once in such disrepair that it was sold to a demolition man. It was Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame that revived national interest in the building and save it from destruction.
